SI DIMPLES AT SI YAYA

Well, it was bound to happen ... sooner or later.  And when it did, it came from left field, leaving everyone shell-shocked and smiling. Almost everyone, that is.

Just my ten cents worth:  Alden Richards should have been a big star by now.

Why? Let me count my take.

First, he has the looks.  Better yet, he has the height.  Some have the looks but not the tindig to distinguish them from those destined to do supporting roles.  Not that being vertically-challenged is a curse to those who intend to pursue careers in front of the camera  (think Danny DeVito ... and, no, I will not name the local counterparts lest I be physically attacked by their fans because I called their idols punggok) but it helps.  It helps that the suit or the gown falls well on a tall lean body. And with the case of Mr. Richards, there are those dimples.

I mean ... who in the world can resist those dimples? There is something on the verge of weird as to how indentations in the cheeks can generate so much swooning and the loosening of underwear garters.

Second, he knows his camera.  Oh, yes: Alden knows his camera very well ... and it has got nothing to do with his winning Mister Laguna sometime in the earlier part of this century.  The point is that when he does those little waves on tv ... there is a collective sigh from womankind (and the wanna be womankind as well) because they have been charmed.  That's it: he is charming. He is not only good looking but he is charming. Which leads me to the third point ...

Third, he is well-mannered.  There is something of that gentleman in him that brings back the virtues of being decent and educated.  After all, the young man is schooled --- and it shows not only in his demeanor but the fact that it is not a put-on.  As contrasted with a great number of his peers, Mr. Richards is both old school and up to date.  He is old school since he resembles the matinee idols of the past --- when good grooming, right conduct and respect for women mattered a lot.  He is up to date because he can still cut across the young audience while wanting to be mothered by anyone above thirty years of age.

And lastly ... the kid's got what it takes. He's got talent --- and it completely befuddles/confuses/discombobulates me as to why his mother studio never made the most of what he has to turn him into a much bigger star than he has become in the here and now.  What's that? It only took Eat Bulaga two months to turn him into the Bae ng Bayan where he has been around for ... uh, years?

This was the boy eliminated from a talent search but was brought back to life by the network's management. But then again, the potential was not maximized as he was relegated to the more-of-the-same roles that yielded just-so-so reaction from audiences.  The sad part is that Mr. Richards could have been the next big thing in that network --- alongside Dingdong Dantes and the other leading men who have been in the forefront.  Sad to say, it took an "accident" like co-hosting in their iconic noontime show to reveal to the world that, "Hey, this kid is not just a pretty face. He sells. "

Yes, he sells so much that now everybody is falling all over each other to get a piece of him.

The Universe has a way of providing its own sweet time.

That included Maine Mendoza, now known to the rest of the planet --- including competition --- as the Phenomenal Yaya Dub.

OK, I never got the thrill of Dubsmashing --- but then kanya-kanyang trip so let that be so.  If someone wants to go miming quotable quotes or memorable lines from movies, eh, di fine.  But ever since Ms. Mendoza started dubsmashing scenes immortalized by no less than the unchallenged Massacre Movie Queen herself, specifically in the Rono film, Feng Shui, she had people hitting her YouTube uploads by the millions.

The difference between Ms. Mendoza and about 90% of the wannabe-artistas out there is that she does not need it.  Come to think of it, we are not even sure if this is what she really wanted since the girl is a graduate of the School of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the De la Salle College of Saint Benilde.  Get this: she did her apprenticeship in a food establishment in upstate New York City, OK?  Like the rest of the graduates of SHRM of CSB, she isn't out there to cook burgers or doughnuts.

Her rise to fame is accidental and she seems to be having fun.  Her addition to Eat Bulaga's roster of Kabarkads is a case of absolutely perfect timing.  When she assumed the character of Yaya Dub, much harassed caregiver to Wally Bayola's hilarious Lola Nidora, that whole gang with Jose Manalo and master chameleon Paolo Ballesteros  raiding the baranggays of Manila exploded with a new adrenaline overload.

Yaya Dub and Lola Nidora were enough to generate fresh interest in the 36 year old noontime show but the inclusion of Alden and Yaya Dub's lampungan and kiligan literally brought the house down ... and the ratings flying off the roof.  Just at the time when people thought Eat Bulaga was already showing wear and tear and audience fatigue .... WHAPPAK! Suddenly the planet reversed its somewhat predictable orbit and nobody was prepared for the phenomenon that has become of Aldub.

On their first monthsary, Maine Mendoza found herself on the banner photo of the front page of Philippine Daily Inquirer right above the headline.  Alden Richards is featured in Ricky Lo's column on the same day occupying an entire page of pure dimple power. And people are categorically enthralled by a simulated Romeo and Juliet kalyeserye because of so many reasons.

Others find this banal, cheap and shallow but then the diversity of perception comes from how you look at pop cult phenomena and not how they stand in one's personal taste or order of priorities.

The Aldub phenomenon is taking place because it is happening at the right time and at the right place.

The common reason is that they give good vibes.  They herald the return to innocence.  To fun. To good clean fun that does not involve insulting or downgrading anyone for looks, reputations or whatever.  They are a breath of recycled fresh air because they provide the same template of Cinderella's motif, the Senyorito in the dashing Alden and the portrayal of a rubber-faced yaya in Maine.  In other words, they are a reaction to the negativity that is surrounding media --- with endless news of dishonesty and corruption in politics, the game of thrones in the presidential elections of 2016 and the unforgivable traffic leaving residents of the Metro in a state of nervous breakdown.

Aldub exploded into the phenomenon that it is ... because it provided good and clean respite from the polluted air we inhale by reading the news ... or simply going out of our houses.

People may think it is so mababaw to be fascinated by all these ... but give it some thought and you know it is not.

Nothing happens by accident ... including pop cult sensations.  Everything is a response to a much larger issue.

And all the audience really wanted was a return to good old falling in love.

  8. thank you Direk Joey you nailed it.. and what's the best part of your blog is STRAIGHT FROM THE HEART. "GOOD VIBES" nga. the old fashion fairy tale CINDERELLA STORY. yun na kaya ang nakakamiss sa buhay pagod narin kasi ang people sa mga artista pa demure, pa sexy and lahat NG "PA"!!! im lahat nakaka relate dito kasi minsan we need to exhale sa mga artistang nakakaumay. Si Maine Mendoza "yayaDub" so simple yet so beautiful. mommy ko nga 62 na kinikilig sa ALDUB. at yung eat bulaga sa tanghali ang bonding time namin. tawa kami ng tawa. since i've been in abroad for 20 years this time nag for good na ko here in pinas. so i need to be with my mom, so happy staying with my mom then watching eat bulaga and kalyeserye. haping happy ko na makita mother ko na laughing trip. this is a blessing for us. God bless you Direk Joey i hope ikaw yung mag direk ng movie ni Alden and Maine Mendoza.

  11. By far one if not the best write-up ive seen bout AlDub. Spot on and perfect description of how many people are feeling about the tandem. I, one of the many who says that are not really into Loveteams or showbiz in general..but now follows this teamup (btw im a 37 yo bloke)to a point that i now have a twitter accnt to help contribute to the fandom's clamor. Slow claps to u Direk Joey..and to ur awesome mind. And thank you for those fine words you have for AlDub. Again on behalf of the entire AlDub Nation, THANK YOU for ur support.

  12. Great writing Direk Joey. I loved how you pointed out that it took Eat Bulaga just a couple of months to make a star out of Alden Richards. He showed a lot of promise when he first started. Pero sabi nga lahat sa tamang panahon. I guess it was fate that brought him to Eat Bulaga in the first place and it was fate that Maine Mendoza was brought in. The universe seemed to have conspired to make it all happen. The AlDub team-up made me believe in love again (I guess that goes for everyone who admire them).

  13. Yaya Dub or Maine mendoza brought the house down first not Alden. So yaya deserves quality endorsements, interviews, projects and movies too. :) Hoping for Yaya Dub more spotlight at showbiz industry.

  15. And I finally give in! Lol!

Allright, I'm a fan, since the conception of Aldub. I was nursing my newborn and watched my toddler playing around when I witnessed their first 'glances'. For a work-at-home mom, Aldub definitely gives me a breath of the freshest (if there's a word) air every day. Hubby is in abroad and I'm stuck with my kids at home, and working in between their naps, you could not think how a mom like me could survive a day! But with them as my ulam every lunch, i must say I enjoyed my every day routine now. I admit I am never a fan to any loveteam before. I am an avid showtime viewer but yes I'm watching EB now since then. Dinamay ko na asawa ko sa Aldub! And not suprising he's hooked in to the loveteam. I remember he said that it somehow de-stress him from the work over load. Knowing my husband's reputation, i couldn't believe it at first but he initiated the talk about the kalyeserye. Honestly, i kinda lost my interest to any love affairs and somehow im not getting anymore romantic towards my husband. But sharing how the kalyeserye went on and on brings so much new things between us. Para ding may nag spark! Lol! And we're always looking forward now to talk at the end of the day! Hahahaha. Weird i know!
Thanks for this article...been into research of both of their background. I just hope the network will take care of Maine, same to Alden should also take care of his lucky charm. They became a blessing to me and i know to other people out there as well. After a month, this is my first comment after reading blog after blog, following both their accounts and their fanatics' comment in every social network out there. More power! GOD bless AlDub

    1. I agree with you. My husband has a very stressful job, with lots of deadline. We both watch Eat Bulaga and wait for Juan for All, All for Juan just to watch the kalyeserye. It helped him destress and forget about work. Even if EB is telecast 11:00pm-12mn we will wait for it. ( it shows replays the next day) good ole fashion jokes/fun you might call them but it's so nice to see and hear him laugh out loud.
Thank you Direk Joey for saying /writing the exact sentiments we viewers want to see, we Filipinos abroad would like to watch in this chaotic world we have.

  16. HI Direk! Thank you for sharing your thoughts about this phenomenal love team! I've been watching Eat Bulaga for as long as I can remember and honestly, I admire the staff's creativeness when it comes to gimiks. Halos lahat talaga patok sa masa. However, in all these years, I never enjoyed watching Eat Bulaga as much as I do now. There's a different kind of feels lalo na pag 12nn na, may anticipation kumbaga. I've witnessed the first time Bae Alden Richards and Yaya Dub met on screen and I felt the kilig right then and there. There's this undeniable spark between them, hindi ko maipaliwanag ang kilig, basta lang. That is why I am happy that a lot of people are appreciating their tandem, feeling ko they somehow connect us dahil ang dami ng friendship and fandoms na nabuo coz of AlDub. Just like what you said, their tandem gives Good Vibes sa maraming tao.

More power to you Direk! And thank you for giving AlDub a space in your blog.

  19. Old school, old values. This is what really caught me. Thank you direk for reiterating this. They are really a breath of fresh and they are really a good example of teens having clean innocent fun. This is what our youth need right now, role models that will bring them back to old school ligawan :)

  20. Exactly Direk! I, for one, despise love teams because they usually have this manufactured and precisely cooked (with the same ingredients na nakakaumay) appeal. I am even guilty of branding people, who follow these formulaic love teams, baduy and shallow. Heck, I don't even watch romcoms or chick flicks. But these two are surprisingly different, maybe because they are packaged differently. The show is improv and their reactions are a tug of war between reel and real.

I also agree RE Richard's impressive acting chops. I have watched a couple of episodes from his previous works (Carmela, Illustrado) and his skills scream for greatness. I think part of the reason why he is not widely recognized is because people are used to watching him as the other half of an ever inconsistent love team (Marian Rivera, Louis delos Reyes). Not as a solo, independent actor. So probably that's what is also lacking, patok na ka-love team.

Thanks to the interesting (yet potentially threatening to other artists) newcomer, Maine, and the accidental explosion of events; his name and his works are now getting a well-deserved attention.

The people behind these two just have to strategically use this hype and avoid screwing things up. Together (or even individually), they can be the next big thing.

I am interested to find out how far this "phenom" pair could go.

  24. Thank you for articulating in a superb manner what many AlDub fans feel but don´t have enough talent to put into words. Another thing I appreciate about this phenomenon is the realization dawning on their fans that true beauty is a whole package and not just on the outside. Maine might not be a stunner, although she is pretty in her own right, but her bubbly personality and lack of affectations is so endearing. That Alden appreciates her also gives the public a new perspective on him. He´s not just like any of the other popular male stars around but someone who appreciates more than just physical attributes. I´m hoping that the rest of the youth, and grown-ups, follow suit.

  25. Good point Direk.
For almost 2-3yrs ni Alden, ngayon lang tlga nagbloom yung career niya. I guess malaking factor yung "accidental loveteam" nila ni Yaya Dub. Pakonti konti. Ngayon lang siya totally naappreciate ng tao.

As for Maine, since wala pa siyang contract, choice niya kung mananatili siya sa industriya.

So I also want to commend the hosts and the other artists involve in Kalye Serye :)

As for the expectation of fans na "Sana-maging-sila-in-real-life"
Wala man lang getting-to-know-each-other stage? :)

In the end, as a AlDub fan, I'm WISHING THEM REAL HAPPINESS. No matter what happen to them, individually and as loveteam, I will be very happy sa success and happiness na makukuha nila :)

    1. personally i find them very young to be involve especially with Maine who has no showbiz background and i bet, she is not even prepared with her sudden popularity and she might not be able to handle the changing love teams or on screen romance.
this two hopefully will go for career just like Marian and DingDong. they were a couple for long time and been paired to different partners but was able to separate their personal relationship.

    1. Spot-on, Direk Joey! Alden has been in the industry for quite a long time. I think the network once favored another talent who has been compared with Alden in terms of height and appeal. Unfortunately, this talent failed to meet the expectations of many because of his "ham-acting" skills. Alden is already destined for stardom. He has the looks, height, charisma and talent. EB is the right venue to give this guy a break. You can't say NO to an "institution" that has been entertaining and educating people from different walks of life for the last three decades.

  34. these two will go long way with their careers because both have that charisma, personality, supportive family, down to earth especially Aden the way he talks to press people. i have not followed any filipino actors or TV program or any showbiz news for so long. I was once bored on Facebook and read all the comments when this #aldub appears and out of curiosity, i searched them on YouTube and I, myself was glued ever since! It took Eat Bulaga to make him a star as he is now because "that is his tamang panahon" same with Maine..this is her Tamang Panahon which she was able to finished her degree first which of course every parents want for their children. Kudos to everyone!

  35. Love the article. This is really a breath of fresh air from the very much adulterated media/entertainment industry from sex, hatred, violence, corruption etc.. it's just a feel-good As I look at it, these two represents the values we want and need, especially for our growing children. I don't like my 11 year old girl keep seeing those twerking girls in those almost panty-like shorts everyday. I also have a boy, and Alden is a very good example to the general male public audience. No matter how we deny the fact that media plays a big role in our lives especially of today's youth-that is reality.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Love the article.
Direk Mike Tuviera said he found out that Maine Mendoza/Yaya Dub had a real crush on Alden, and they experimented. They wanted to see how Yaya would react on Alden watching her. Kudos to the creative geniuses of Eat Bulaga. They saw grabbed the potential love team, but they did not rush the love story. They let it mature. And so now Eat Bulaga is devouring the competition. What resonated with people (especially the young), is the kilig between a simple but wacky yaya and a handsome young actor. But what sustained the #kalyeserye and #aldub loveteam is traditional story-telling. Corny nga e. Budding romance, may contrabidang lola, a jilted suitor for the love triangle. But it's filled with traditional family values. Alden has to prove his worth to the Lola/guardian of Yaya. And Yaya does not show a lot of skin, unlike other actresses. So clean love with a lot of humor.

I feel the staff initiated it, but yaya dub started it, then finally Lola nidora set the plot, but I really think he did if not for the "tamang panahon". And alden has become one of wheel alongside Maine. Alden who may not have been the starter but definitely prove himself to be a necessary element of this phenomenon. Eat Bulaga as the engine has made it all happened. All these worked to create the magic. It just somehow makes us fans proud of the whole thing that we can't help but think that fate had made it all up.

  48. You are so right about the whole thing.
GMA Network gave him the chance to shine. He had shows here and there. He had teleseryes and was even partnered to their valued Leading Lady Marian Rivera but Alden's star just wouldn't shine. And GMA asked Eat Bulaga to try Alden...He was actually given a month to try hosting. Remember before Eat Bulaga he was partnered to different actresses/ singers and was even a regular in Sunday Shows. Then came Maine Mendoza. There was chemistry...something that he never had with all those actresses that were partnered to him. It only took a Yaya Dub for the people to notice Alden...and a Joey de Leon and an Allan K to tease them on National tv. The people picked from there. And we are all hooked.

  49. Superbly written Direk JoeyR!
AlDub is indeed a breath of freshly-recycled air in our poluted media. They are inspiring the nation, they give timely "wake up calls" and they do entertain in the real sense of the word. :)

  51. Is it possible for AlDub to create a trend of more positive TV segments in the future?

And if they could do so, paano nga ba natin ire-"replicate" ang isang napakagandang "aksidente"?

Afterall, the bottomline for creating TV shows is whether it has potential to sell well.

Eh ang lakas bumenta ng AlDub. So I can only guess that the network would love to create another "AlDub Phenomenon".

But the question remains: Is it possible to replicate this "accident" for the sake of creating a positive yet profitable TV Show?

What do you think po, Direk?

Btw, direk... After watching more of it, I totally agree with you. Hindi lang basta bastang kababawan ang AlDub. It reflects something that can only be seen when studied deeper.

  53. talk about being horribly late to the party. the truth is i did not know that such phenomena occurred 5 years ago. it came only to my attention when my client who is into statics and records mentioned it in one of our counselling sessions recently. oh! by the way i worked as a mental health and addictions counsellor based here in Waikato, New Zealand. according to my client five years ago a world record of 40 million tweets was set in 24 hours and it happened in the philippines, and i don't know anything about it. i asked him was it something really important? like in scale of maybe lunar landing or advancement in cryogenic or something i asked my client, he replied doesn't matter what is important is the record. after the session i started asking friends about it, they all exclaimed; it's the bloody followed by a very colorful explicit adjective senseless love story on a noontime game show. curiosity got the better part of me and check it out and yep...it is a bleamin senseless love story or as what written as "mababaw"

i have worked in this field for more than eight years and it was always been embedded that best outcome can only be achieve when it is client driven their viewpoint takes precedence and manipulation is just another form for asking for help. my practice has been defined by nietzsche's "you have your way i have my way, as for the right way, the correct way and the only way it does not exist so a need to meet halfway so the norms of society and your personal norms will be address. the thing that fascinates me is why as a society has the audacity to come with these standards and what form of a linear measure we are basing them. when i was growing up the term baduy, bakya crowd is very common. is is always about the societal class? who's authority to put into an accepted social standing that this is sensible and this is senseless? and worst why do wee accept it? here in new zealand there are efforts to help people who has this affliction especially addiction, even though funders just need stats how many patients have been seen not how is their recovery in progress. meanwhile some countries has decided to systematically just exterminate them. will there ever be a time when we just see a person as it unfolds in front of us and disregard whatever trappings it came from or even what it brings? as what my client said it doesn't matter a record is a record...apologies for the meandering litany if i did not read your blog i would probably...no i will definitely agree.yep! mababaw nga. then as someone who needs to practice on what i preach, i followed your recommendation and i did not only gave it a thought but i took time to watch it, and it was fun like really fun does not matter about the story line it was just pure unadulterated fun. i have stopped watching the news since the orange blob floated that bleach is good c-19 cure. nah! screw that i rather watch kalyeserye because it is fun, the people in it- is fun.
